Chronic, degenerative and incurable, Parkinson’s disease affects five out of 1000 Europeans over 60 years old. Researchers from the DiPAR project are now using the latest technologies, including video games, to improve the accuracy of early diagnosis and provide patients with better rehabilitation treatments.

DiPAR will deliver a novel diagnostic system for the early diagnosis of the onset of Parkinson’s disease. As part of the consortium, five European SMEs have come together to form a vertically integrated supply chain to work with four RTD performers to deliver an enhanced version of technology developed by Manus Neurodynamica Ltd. as a proof of concept. The intelligent decision support system will include a unique hand held device, and communications framework, supporting secure patient data transfer between remote clinics and healthcare centres. The final system will be taken through pre‐ clinical trials, conducted at the University Medical Centre Groningen (Netherlands) to demonstrate the efficacy of the system.

Parkinson’s disease affects 5 citizens in every 1000 over the age of 60, is chronic, degenerative and currently incurable. Although there are promising therapies on the horizon, the best patient outcome available today can only be delivered on the basis of early and accurate diagnosis, which would lead to superior management and care planning, resulting in enhanced quality of life for the patient. Across the developed world, the population is ageing, leading to increases per capita in neuromotor conditions.

The commercial exploitation of DiPAR will lead to improvement of the European and global healthcare system via early diagnosis of the illness and will generate significant revenues from the sales and associated support of the diagnostics system, thereby improving the competiveness of the SME partners involved.
