ACCESSIBLE project is organizing its first Workshop on “accessibility simulation technologies and standards issues”, within the frame of the 12th ICCHP conference in Vienna. The Workshop will be held on Tuesday 13 of July 2010, in the context of the ICCHP pre-conference in Vienna. The ICCHP, International Conference on Computers Helping People with Special Needs, 2010 wants to highlight the progress of the issue of Interfacing the existing and emerging Human-Computer Interface as well as achievements and plot a R&D-roadmap towards such challenges, which will ensure even higher product and service usability.

The goal of the AsTeRICS Project is to develop a construction set for assistive technologies which can be adapted to the motor abilities of the end-users, technologies that will allow the access to different devices like PCs, cell phones and smart home devices, all of them integrated in a platform adapted as much as possible to each user.
The main objective of the project is to develop a support platform that will facilitate and improve communication resources of people with motor disabilities in their upper limbs.
The end user group at which this Project is aimed are adults (18+ years old) with motor disabilities in the upper limbs, with no cognitive impairment, no perceptual limitations (neither visual nor auditory) and with basic skills in using technologies like PCs, cell phones, electronic agendas, etc.

A workshop on cognitive support technology for older people will be organised at Goldsmiths, University of London on 19th May 2010. This workshop is jointly organised by the Vital Mind and Hermes FP7 projects.
In this one-day workshop, the state of the art in cognitive support technology for older people will be explored. It will discuss how technology can help the elderly to preserve their quality of life, describing work which several research groups have done and are doing in the area of cognitive training and assisting technologies and outlining some of the challenges that lie ahead. The goal is to share best practice and to generate new conceptual frameworks for how to advance, promote and spread assisting technology research for older people.
The topics that will be covered are:
– Universal access and assistive technology
– Inclusive design for older people
– Benefits of cognitive training systems in older adults
– Drivers and barriers to the adoption of ICT by older people
– Exploitation of cognitive support technology for older people

The Vital Mind project use cognitive psychology, the television medium and advance interactive ICT to enable older adults to actively and autonomously participate in mind fitness activities while sitting in front of their TV set. The project supports the design of iTV-based applications to enhance cognitive training as well as develop innovative input devices, including non-verbal vocal interaction, gestural and pointing inputs. Delivery of the applications via USB Flash disk will be promoted in addition to broadcasting.
HERMES aims at reducing the negative effects of cognitive decline by supporting prospective and episodic memory in situations where a user feels at a loss. An accessible home-based and mobile device offer advanced calendaring functionality and sophisticated access to past events based on intelligent audio and visual processing and reasoning.

Fraunhofer leads an International Consortium Winning the Grant For Research and Development Project On Introducing Simulation-Based and Virtual Reality Testing to Support Accessible Product design and Development.

STUTTGART, GERMANY – March 10, 2010 – The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft announces that they are leading the VERITAS project (Virtual and Augmented Environments and Realistic User Interactions To achieve Embedded Accessibility DesignS). VERITAS is an integrated project under the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission on accessible and assistive ICT. The €12M accessibility research and development effort brings together 32 European companies and organisations that collaborate on the VERITAS Project.

It aims to develop, validate and assess tools for built-in accessibility support at all stages of ICT and non-ICT product development, including specification, design, development and testing. Motivated by the clear lack of systematic accessibility assessment frameworks and the need to involve real disabled users, the goal of VERITAS is to introduce simulation-based and virtual reality testing, utilizing virtual users, at all stages of assistive technologies product design and development into the automotive, smart living spaces, buildings & construction, domotics), workplace, e-health and infotainment applications areas. VERITAS aims to ensure that future products and services are being systematically designed for all people including those with disabilities and functional limitations as well as older people. Furthermore, VERITAS plans to promote its results to the appropriate standards organisations for consideration and potential adoption and also to make them available through an open framework. The VERITAS Project will involve research and prototypes that address a broad range of impairments related to vision, hearing, mobility, cognitive resources, as well as the needs of older people (independent and dependent).

EASPD (European Association of Service Providers for Persons with Disabilities) is a partner in the Inclusion project, which is financed by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union. The main objective of the INCLUSION project is to develop a product which will facilitate the mobility of motor impaired people in open spaces by helping them to track down obstacles or barriers on their way and identify accessible locations. The INCLUSION project will lead to the definition, design, implementation and testing of a device aimed at matching the needs of people in wheelchairs.
EASPD is responsible for gathering wheelchair users’ needs and collecting essential information which will be of primary importance for the development of the final product. To achieve its target EASPD is carrying out a survey among wheelchair users through this questionnaire.
Once completed, it can be send back to the e-mail address mentioned at the end of the questionnaire by Tuesday the 23rd of March.
The questionnaire is anonymous and the information collected will be used in complete confidentiality and solely for the purpose of the INCLUSION project. The return of the questionnaire will constitute the subject’s consent to participate to the survey.

ACCESSIBLE is an EU FP7 project spanning over 36 months, start date 1st September 2008, with the aim of improving the accessibility of software development products, by introducing an harmonised accessibility methodology into accessible software development processes, using significantly better measurement strategies, methodologies, etc.

The envisaged improvement will enable large organisations, SMEs or individuals (developers, designers, etc.) to produce software products of superior accessibility and usability, accompanied with appropriate measures, technologies and tools that improve their overall quality.

The ACCESSIBLE project is implementing specific methodologies and tools for ensuring accessibility for designers and software developers.

An open call for experts has been launched for supporting the evaluation of the envisaged project results (evaluation of Assessment tools, developer designer aid module, and the Harmonized methodology). The target is to receive feedback on the results of the project under the expert view of people who have experience in this domain and can evaluate, approve and enrich the ACCESSIBLE outcomes.

Candidates will preferably be public bodies, representatives of software development organisations and SMEs, industrial organisations, accessibility consultants, developers, designers, testers, and other interest organisations and researchers. Also the participation of people with disabilities should be welcomed.
